]]> Comment on Poll on Gilgit Baltistan by Mir Aman Adil http://dardistannews.wordpress.com/poll-on-gilgit-baltistan/#comment-104 Mir Aman Adil Fri, 11 Sep 2009 16:07:32 +0000 http://dardistannews.wordpress.com/?page_id=260#comment-104 Politics is one thing and our affiliation with Pakistan and islam is another.At the time of creation of Pakistan Gilgit was terribly backward, the local muslim population hated the Sikh ruler and its army,even today the people of Bunji and Jaglot have differences with roots from the Dogra era.It was the people of Jaglot who rebelled against the Bunji garrison and destroyed the Partab pul, which till today bears witness of the hatered towards Indian rule.There was a very narrow track through Babusar to Gilgit,obviously one of the causes of slow development.It was after the construction of the KKH that Gilgit saw rapid progress.Being a Gilgiti I attribute the slow progress to the people of Gilgit.Only a few enterprising and well read people of Gilgit like Wazir Shamshad Mamu,Wali Family,Raziq Wakil, Usman sahib (author of many books) Shaheen&Abdullah Contractors,took up business. Other business men came from Hazara or Swat. Faqir Shah came from Manshera started as a jeep driver and became a millionaire.Why could most of the people of Gilgit not follow suit. Most of the shopkeepers in the markets are not locals,Why?They are either Kashgharis or Pathans. The few who attained higher education went and settled in Islamabad ,Lahore or Karachi and then their Children prefer not to stay in the backward areas, obviously due to fewer facilities. In the Last sixty years people from Gilgit have attianed positions in almost all fields of life,to name a few, be it geology( Mr. Abdullah,Sadaqat), Gems business (Inayatullah foreign qualified), Army(Colonel Hassan's Sons,Brigadier Inayat Wali,Brig Barkat,Brig Ahmed Khan,General Najam, countless Colonels ) Doctors ( Faarman, Ijaz,Col Farman dentist, Diaar yuchi Anaesthetist)bureaucrats Wazir Sadiq,Humayun beg and his sons,Mohammad Ali, Fida Hussain, Noor Mohammad). Things now are absolutely different, the locals are now quite self sufficient and capable to manage and run their own affairs. I think instead of harping for independence, there is a need of gathering all the experienced well read even retired local people and ask the government now we have the trained and experienced human resource in all walks of life to manage our own affiars in our own traditional ways.I strongly oppose seperatist ideas propogated by the Indians. Rest Assure all the above mentioned notables hate any form of Indian hagemony or domination. We should discourage such rash statements hailed by the Indians,and sincerely think for a progressive path for the development of the Gilgit Baltistan region. The Governor of this region should be an experienced notable local to this region and not an alien political personality elected into power from some other province.All the bureaucracy should be run by experienced locals of repute. I do not want to belittle the nationalist feelings but would certainly want to demarcate cheap political popularity and sincere and earnest drive towards political autonomy. TO START WITH, an association of all the well read experienced locals from all walks of life like former bureaucrats,senior miitary officers,Doctors, professors , Engineers, and other Civil servants should be made. This powerful forum may then impress upon the government of Pakistan in a reasonable and sensible way to trust the experienced locals to run their own affairs, the efficiency of which shall certainly be more than a system infested with non local people of vested interests.I strongly oppose political people of other provinces running our affairs because ultimately things end up into vested interests and compromise developmen of local areas. Having proposed the above I invite the young and old to forward their comments to the above proposal. I also suggest that we should discourage any comment favouring the Dogras of the Indians in relation to our culture or future. Gilgit and Baltistan have a great economic prospect such as international tourism,( a multi Billion Dollar industry) which cannot be realised if we resort to seperatist infighting.take the example of Maldives a small muslim island country which runs its economy on tourism. Why cant we not get together, ensure and restor our peaceful harmony by shunning international interference in our politics and future and ensure peace which shall then autimatically invite tourists from the world over and turn the backwardness of this region into prosperity. I request the Indians to leave us alone and try and improve the lives of their own population.We would rather die fighting rather than accept Indian dominatin i any form, which we already demonstrated sixty years ago.
