Heavy Snow fall in Yasin Valley
Yasin Valley is hit by heavy snow fall for the last few days. As most of the regions in Gilgit Baltistan along the Himalyan belt are snow-blanked this Winter, Yasin Valley stands almost on the top. For the last few days, the weather here is frigid and snow-packed. Those who live in the far-flung regions like Darhkoot, Nazbar, Thoi and Qorqolti are facing a challenging situation. The primary roads are dangerously packed with snow making the regions cut off from the major towns. Continuation of the snow here in the coming days would prompt fear among the masses of food and fuel shortage. Some areas would be endangered by the blizzards and Avanlanchis. The ongoing claims by the world community, that the Himalayan Glaciers would come to an end by 2035, appears a myth in such cold weather and heavy snow fall in recent years. Remember, the UN Climate Chnage Panel, IPPC in it’s assessment in 2007 had claimed that the Himalya could lose it’s Glaciers by 2035. Critics already have termed the report faulty. Himalyan Glaciers feed all the major rivers across south Asia.
Nation to observe the death anniversary of Perveen Shakir, an internaitonally acclaimed peotess.
By Naveed Hussain Yasini:
An inspirational and visionary poetess, Perveen Shakir was the queen of Urdu Peotry in Sub-continent. She had a class of her own style to express her feelings and win the hearts. Her work is employed by the form of prevalent ghazal and free verse with the themes illuminating love, feminism, and social stigmas.
Her work was often based on romanticism, exploring the concepts of love, beauty and their contradictions, and heavily integrated the use of metaphors, similes and personifications. She is considered the first girl in Pakistan to use the word girl in her poetry in a male dominated society. Shakir died in 1994, as a result of a car accident in Islamabad.
People with her class born in centuries, whose work permeate generations even though they live a short life. Perveen’s name is a shining star in the indo-pak artistic horizon. She broke the taboos. She tred to areas where angels truly fear to go.
She said an early good-by to all of us, her services and commitment to art will be remembered forever. As she said in one of her collections of poetry that if she dies people will not forget her. On December 26, the nation is going to observe her fifteenth death anniversary with great respect. Literary figures will lay wreaths on her grave in H-8 graveyard.

Punjab government’s policy benefits students of Gilgit-Baltistan in medical colleges
(Naveed Hussain Yasini). In the recent elections of Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly different political parties tried their level best to facilitate the people of the area in various ways. In the context of education sector, PML(N) stood in the front line by providing an enormous and prodigious opportunity i.e raising the number of medical and engineering seats to its double in the public sector colleges and universities in Punjab (but it is another debate that why the Lords of Directorate of education Gilgit couldn’t do the same for Engineering seats this year???).This very opportunity enabled even the students with low marks to medical colleges.Previously, in the famous medical college “King Edward medical College” there were only three seats but this year six brilliant students could avail this opportunity.Likewise, in AIMC,FJMC,SIMS,Nishtar Medical College,RMC etc, students of Gilgit-Baltistan were nominated in 2:1 of that of last year.
Two brilliant students of Yasin Valley “FARZANA NIAT”(topper of KIU-EB 2009) and NAVEED AHMAD were nominated in Allama Iqbal Medical College Lahore and Ayub Medical College Abbottabad respectively.Students from Yasin valley appreciated their endeavors and wished for such superb accomplishments in the near future.
AKU Convocation, Pakistan needs leader committed to public service – Dr Maleeha Lodhi
“More than ever our country needs citizens and leaders who ake public service the hallmark of all that they do and commit themselves resolutely and single-mindedly to address the terrible burdens of poverty, disease and deprivation,” said Dr Maleeha Lodhi, the former ambassador of Pakista
n to the US and Britain, and recipient of the President’s Hilal-e-Imtiaz award for Public Service in Pakistan, while addressing graduands as chief guest at Aga Khan University’s 22nd convocation ceremony. The ceremony marked the graduation of 328 students in the fields of medicine, nursing and education from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and the US.
Speaking about the “challenging and testing times” that Pakistan is facing, Dr Lodhi urged the newly graduated students to use their knowledge and skills not only for professional goals, but also to reduce the burden of inequities that blight justice and development. “It is often the desperation in people’s lives that leads them to commit desperate acts, sometimes even violent acts, and it is this desperation and hopelessness in our society that, you and I, together and individually, must become active participants to change and transform.”
Dr Lodhi also stressed on the importance of high ethical and moral standards. Encouraging students to be winners, not whiners, Dr Lodhi said that energy and commitment, not time, were the key to high performance. Along with character, conviction, conscience and compassion, the important factor for the future journey of each student, will be choice. “There will be no doubt many choices for you to make… I hope you will choose courage over comfort, action over inertia, compassion over complacency, bridges over barriers and above all, hope over fear. You will save lives by your knowledge of how to heal, how to treat.”
The notion of service and particularly community service was emphasised by Firoz Rasul, President, AKU. The University has a strong commitment to community development and “a great strength for AKU is the ability to engage with communities and our greatest opportunity is to assist and empower these populations to improve their quality of life,” he said. “When I review the community-based efforts of our Medical School or the research efforts of the teachers from the Institute for Educational Development, or the grass roots connectivity of our School of Nursing graduates, I am humbled by the opportunities the communities provide us. It is these opportunities – to learn about the issues that gravely affect us all – that allow AKU to develop programmes and services to meet these needs, and to build in our graduates a sense of community commitment and social responsibility.”
This year, the University’s School of Nursing graduated 172 students and the Medical College 114 students, three of whom received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Sciences. The University’s Institute for Educational Development granted degrees to 42 students, with two PhDs in Education. The star of the evening was Dr Taimur Saleem who not only received the Best Graduate Award from the Medical College, but also the Gold Medal for achieving the highest marks in all four professional examinations; he is only the eighth recipient of the Gold Medal in the University’s history. Afroz Sadiq Sajwani received the Best Graduate Award from the School of Nursing.
The University also presented three other awards. The Award of Excellence in Education went to Dr Rukhsana Zuberi, for her outstanding contribution to education, the Award of Distinction to Dr Syed Husain Mohammad Jafri, while Dr Jamsheer Talati received the Professor Emeritus award.

Unofficial Results of Election in Gilgit Baltistan.
After being given a new status, the first election for the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly has completed peacefully with relatively few incidents of violence. Indeed it is a very good sign. In a scenario where the whole country is in a sate of war, the peaceful election in Gilgit-Baltistan is no less than a blessing. The people of Gilgit-Baltistan have proved that they are civilised and peaceful.
Also there was no sectarian propaganda during the election campaigns. The Legislative Assembly would be a ray of hope for the local people who have been deprived of their rights since 1947. I congratulate the people of Gilgit-Baltistan on this occasion. (The News Internaitonal)
